The Mississippi Action Coalition, in a collaborative role with the Nurses On Boards Coalition, is honored and proud to have received one of 16 Health Equity Innovation Grant Awards. We have embarked on a project, “Strengthening Nurses’ Voices to Improve Health Equity: A Community-based Approach, ”to identify and address gaps and barriers preventing nurses from leading change, dismantling issues of structural racism and addressing the impact of the social determinants of health within communities. We have already engaged in data collection and data analysis.

Now we are ready for you to Join Us in an environment of innovative thinking and approaches – town hall meetings – to identify gaps and barriers, thus leading to development and dissemination of educational programming/tools based upon identified needs and approaches to help Action Coalition members prepare and pursue board opportunities and track our results.

We invite your active engagement! The first 20 Action Coalitions to contact us at  nobc@nursesonboardscoalition.org will not only receive next steps i.e., date/time of kick-off meeting, your role, your participation (approximately eight hours), but also a $1,000 stipend for each participating Action Coalition, at the conclusion of the commitment. JOIN US to be a part of raising the tide of nurse trustees pursuing health equity through collaboration and community-based approaches.

Problem Statement: Mississippi’s health rankings, indicators and statistics consistently rank at the bottom of health outcomes being measured.  Chances are that these health outcomes were influenced by the social determinants of health, which are defined as: conditions in the places where people live, learn, work, and play.  It is these factors that need to be addressed in order to create communities in which everyone has a chance to live a long healthy life. The 45,000 registered nurses in Mississippi serve in many capacities throughout the State’s health care system and are strategically located to be a major influence in the health of individuals and communities.  Their education and experience enable them to be a driving force for changing the health culture in Mississippi. Although nurses have historically been instrumental in recognizing the relationship between health and the environment, continued education on the social determinants of health and how to promote community engagement will enhance their ability to lead and engage in activities that will make health a shared value.

Approach:  Educational materials were compiled or developed to provide to nurses on social determinants and a culture of health.  Presentations were made to nursing and inter-professional groups throughout Mississippi. Nurses participated in development of the State Health Improvement Plan.

Products/Outcome: Resource list of social determinants and culture of health information, conference and event presentations, PowerPoint for presentations, website for information and sharing. Increased knowledge of participants about social determinants and building a culture of health.

Implications: Education on the social determinants of health should be a core component of nurses’ and all health professionals’ lifelong learning in order for them to have the competence, skill, and passion to take action and lead change on creating a culture of health in Mississippi communities.

To improve population health, well-being, and equity within a community, it is important to know the population you are serving. These one-page fact sheets provide state-level data on four key demographic and workforce indicators:

  • Distribution of population by race/ethnicity
  • Percentage of population living in rural versus urban areas
  • Distribution of population by federal poverty level
  • Areas in which there is a shortage of primary health professionals

These statistics can guide your Action Coalition’s work in shaping a nursing workforce to better meet local needs and overcoming health disparities in your state. As you integrate other Culture of Health aspects into your work, consider how demographics play a role in health equity and fostering cross-sector collaboration.

You know how grocery stores surround you with sweet temptations as you wait in line to pay? That idea has been turned on its sugary head in West Virginia, where select grocery stores offer healthy checkout lines that tempt customers with vegetables and granola bars, sunscreen and jump ropes. That Culture of Health story is one of many offered online at the National Center for Chronic Disease Prevention and Health Promotion website, which provides a write-up of a number of projects around the country that promote wellness in innovative ways.

Action Coalitions seeking inspiration and ideas for initiatives can browse the whole site or refine the search by sector (including, of course, health care, but also schools, work, and community at large), intervention area (including healthy eating, physical activity, and clinical services), and type of story (outcomes-oriented, or demonstrations that have yet to be tried on a large scale). Search for “nurse” and a story that shows up is a piece showing how more active recess periods in Kentucky help pupils do better in class. Plug in “health care” and “demonstration” and read a piece that one quoting Beverly Quinn, RN, praising the Early and Periodic Screening, Diagnostic and Treatment program now implemented in schools in Leflore County, Mississippi.

The site lists many dozens of ideas from all over—maybe even one in your own neighborhood.

At a time when a severe shortage of primary care providers is making it difficult to ensure that patients in rural and underserved communities get high-quality care, some southern states have enacted laws and rules that prevent highly trained advanced practice registered nurses (APRNs) from doing all they can to help meet the need.

A new paper, Access to Care and Advanced Practice Nurses, A Review of Southern U.S. Practice Laws, from the Center to Champion Nursing in America (CCNA), provides an overview of these laws. CCNA is a joint initiative of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, AARP and the AARP Foundation.

APRNs have advanced training in preventing, diagnosing and treating illness. Allowing them to provide a fuller range of services can help address provider shortages, the paper says. It is part of a new series on issues relating to nurses’ scope of practice.
