The Future of Nursing: Campaign for Action invites nursing students, and faculty, to join the Campaign’s NCLEX Trainers for a special training on the Next Generation NCLEX.

The training will provide nursing students with:

• Information on the changes in the Next Generation NCLEX;

• Best strategies to answer clinical judgement questions;

• Additional resources available to test your knowledge prior to the exam.

Background:

For the past several years, the Campaign has been working with the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ Health Resources and Services Administration, Office of Minority Health, Indian Health Services, and several national nursing organizations to prioritize diversifying the nursing workforce and support schools of nursing with creating or updating their mentor programs. The Campaign, an initiative of AARP Foundation, AARP and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, hosts monthly learning collaboratives, offered through its mentoring initiative, to provide peer-to-peer support and technical assistance to deans and faculty from Historically Black Colleges and Universities, Hispanic-serving and American Indian/Alaska Native-serving institutions.

Presenter:

Carrie Barr, MSN, RN, is the director of undergraduate nursing and associate lecturer at the University of Wyoming. Carrie has been a nurse for 16 years, with experience ranging from critical care, cardiothoracic surgery, oncology, med/surg nursing to being a nurse coach. She has been teaching full-time for the past five years in a variety of courses including foundations, patho-pharmacology, leadership, med/surg I & II and preceptorships. She has also served as a skills and simulation lab coordinator.

Over the past two years, Carrie has been the associate degree program coordinator for Alaska Pacific University (an Alaska native tribal university), which recently received initial accreditation through the Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing and got special commendation for its focus on cultural safety. The ADN program has already expanded to two distance sites in rural Alaska with the overall goal to increase the number of indigenous nurses serving in their communities.

The Future of Nursing: Campaign for Action and the National Council of State Boards of Nursing (NCSBN) will present a webinar aimed primarily at nursing schools that serve students of color to prepare for the new National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX) that will debut in April 2023. The Campaign is an initiative of AARP Foundation, AARP and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation.

This work is a continuation of the Campaign’s commitment to Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) and schools of nursing from Hispanic-serving and American Indian/Alaska Native-serving Institutions. The webinar is directed toward them and our general audience is welcome to join.

For the past three years, many schools of nursing have been doing their due diligence to prepare for the new exam, “Next Generation NCLEX.” In this webinar, NCSBN’s test development director will talk about what students can expect on the new generation NCLEX.

Objectives:

  • Review changes coming to NCLEX-RN and NCLEX-PN exams in 2023
  • Understand the connection between the NCSBN Clinical Judgment Measurement Model and the new case studies and item types that will measure clinical judgment on the Next Generation NCLEX
  • Gain hands-on experience with the Next Generation NCLEX item types and scoring methods

Presenter:

  • Jason Schwartz, MS, Director, Outreach, Marketing and Advocacy, NCSBN
