It brings healthcare professionals whose passion is helping those in need in their community together. Not only does Vegas Roots help feed low income groups fresh food that would otherwise be hard to access, they also bring awareness to the community on the impact healthy eating has on health in general. Unlike many classes that just teach the importance of diet on health, this project actually brings the food to people who have less access and may not be able to afford fresh foods on a regular basis. Chronic illnesses can be prevented with the implementation of fresh produce and whole grains if other, less healthy, food options are reduced. Many people in urban neighborhoods don’t grow up eating many fruits and programs like this help to change the way people think of what they eat. It is especially important to educate groups with less access to fresh foods the importance of healthy eating. Many people do not know the impact that diet has on health and this is a wonderful way to educate people. It’s awesome that nursing students are fundraising to raise money for their community. These students get to have fun while helping people, what could be better? A wonderful aspect of nursing care is treating the whole person, not just their illnesses. Nurses helping feed their community is a unique way to proactively treat a patient, keeping in mind their needs outside the healthcare facility. Many people cannot get to supermarkets if they do not drive or live near public transportation. Since their access to fresh produce is limited, they are forced to eat only what is in the vicinity which is mostly processed and refined foods. Education on healthier food options even with limited access to healthy foods is another great aspect of this program. Getting children involved in planting gardens is wonderful. Children love to be outside working with their hands and will more readily eat fruits and vegetables they have grown themselves. Not only do they get fresh air, they also plant the seeds for lifelong healthy eating habits and learn a great stress reducing hobby that they can do in their spare time as they get older. More programs like this need to be implemented and although it is mostly donation funded, state and local funding of programs like this would do many communities a world of good.

Some of the most prevalent diseases in our country include obesity, type 2 diabetes, hypertension and heart disease. All of these diseases are considered preventable or manageable to some degree. The most influential factor that will permanently revolve around these diseases is nutrition. I am currently a nursing student at Rutgers University and among the many things we learn, the most repetitive things we hear is prevention and health promotion. Prevention can have a multitude of aspects but nutrition will always be a powerful contributor. It is at the up most importance that children are knowledgeable about healthy eating, especially in low income areas where they don’t have readily access to healthy options. I loved the idea of having the Veggie Buck Truck. This is such a great way to reach families who may not have a farmer’s market or other access to fresh ingredients.

As we all know community programs are a challenge when it comes to financing. The idea to have a competitive fundraiser event between nursing schools is an amazing idea. I mean, who doesn’t like a little friendly competition? Getting schools involved is a great way to get the word out about your program. Not only does it bring people together for a great cause, it also brings awareness to some of the most pressing health issues in our society.

I recently did a run-a-thon fundraiser that raised money for my local community. Each person who participated raised money through different means including sponsors, donations, can drives and other options. The day of the race local farmers, business owners and other community establishments were there to support and promote. I love seeing my community come together for good causes. It is imperative that our society develops more programs like this and I wish Vegas Roots continuing success!
