There is so much inequality in our country and a lot of that manifests in health. People from lower socioeconomic classes are disproportionately affected by diabetes and other diseases. A lot of this has to do with the food that is cheaply available. Highly processed foods with high sugar and sodium are extremely cheap, and fresh produce is extremely expensive. When people are living from paycheck to paycheck and can barely afford to eat, how can they possibly eat healthy foods? Yet in the long run the resulting diabetes and diseases costs them even more money and their health. It is a slippery slope and it can seem almost impossible to avoid health problems.
That is why this initiative is so promising. It is said that the current climate of healthcare focuses on treating illnesses rather than preventing them. People want quick fixes for everything but don’t want to put the time and effort into living a healthy lifestyle. In addition to that, people often just lack the time, money, or education to live in a healthy way. But prevention is absolutely the key to improving the health problems in this country. The culture of health campaign is inspiring because people are thinking of little ways to influence people to be healthier. When all around us junk food is being thrown in our faces and is constantly a temptation, failure seems almost inevitable. Having nurses in food banks however is just one innovative way to promote a new kind of culture of health. People who go to food banks are the ones that often can’t afford to buy healthy food, and are therefore the ones that often have uncontrolled diabetes. By changing the food banks to provide healthy food, and providing people with blood sugar checks, education and consultation, these people are actually being given a chance to thrive. In the long run, I think more money should go into initiatives like this. When you invest in prevention, it pays off by saving money on expensive treatments, and it helps people to be more healthy happy and productive. When you invest in the health of one person or community, you are investing in the health of the whole ecosystem, and everybody wins.
