I am a student at Rutgers School of Nursing in New Jersey and although I am just getting my feet wet in the field of nursing, diversity within nursing is an issue I think about often. In my opinion, having a diverse nursing population is important in many different ways. Our patient population is diverse and everyone becomes ill at one point or another regardless of gender, race, religion, or ethnicity. Having a diverse nursing population helps us all better understand health care obstacles within different cultures. We can share information about our own culture which may in turn help to build cultural competence among healthcare professionals. Some patients may also feel more comfortable speaking to someone with a similar background regarding their healthcare needs. And with many patients who speak English as a second language, having a greater bilingual nursing population is definitely beneficial.
In addition to benefitting patients, the video also sends a message to anyone who is thinking about pursuing a career in nursing. The video empowers people from different backgrounds to pursue a career in nursing. People who are thinking about a career in nursing can be further motivated by others with a similar ethnic or gender background who are already pursuing the same dream. I was glad to see a large number of males in the video. As we know, more and more males are entering the field of nursing. I think it’s important for men who are thinking about nursing to see how diverse the field has become.
I personally enjoyed how each nurse in the video mentioned what area of nursing they are interested in pursuing. I even watched the video again because I was unaware of some of the different areas of nursing that were mentioned in the video. I am interested in one day becoming involved in enhancing diversity within the nursing field. This video was motivating for me and encourages me to get involved.
