The school’s success in expanding enrollments of Native America students–and retaining them–can be a model for other nursing programs.

What is it that sets MSU and other schools that have succeeded in diversifying their student bodies apart? “If you treat [Native American] students the same as everyone else, they will fall behind,” says Margaret P. Moss, PhD, JD, RN, in a 2016 issue of Charting Nursing’s Future that profiled MSU and other schools that are contributing to a more diverse nursing workforce. The associate professor at the University at Buffalo School of Nursing and RWJF Health Policy Fellow says that many times, schools are not fully prepared to integrate Native American students.
