There are hundreds of nursing schools in existence that are constantly changing and adding in new programs as the model of healthcare changes. There are many blogs and websites in existence that have attempted to do this, but have failed. The people who create these platforms have good intentions but often fail to keep the information up to date. I have personally used one of these platforms to search for DNP programs. According to the search engine I used many schools only had masters programs. Upon visiting the various schools websites I was able to see that there were more options than I previously thought.
I can imagine that it is frustrating for seasoned nurses with associate degree nurses who are being pushed to go for the BSN. This search engine will allow these nurses to quickly view RN to BSN programs in their area or even online. This will make the process run smoother and I imagine will lead to more nurses seeking information about these programs. I am curious if this information will be released.
From this post, beyondRN.com sounds like the College board website of nursing. College board is an online tool that matches undergraduate students to colleges based on answers to questions concerning residential life, majors, etc. BeyondRN.com has a user friendly interface. Upon visiting the website the consumer is asked to select one of four choices: “I have an associates degree or diploma and want a BSN”, “I am not a nurse and want to begin my studies”, “I have a BSN and want to further my education”, and “I have a MSN and want to further my education.” After making a selection, a list of programs populates. The only downside to this online program is that it only lists Virginia schools. With further searching I see that New Jersey has a similar site. I would be curious to know if a national search engine with detailed information will be created. The AACN has a national database of nursing schools but does not provide program specific information.

I’d like to see scientific literature highlighting how PhD prepared nurse scholars do their “research” on this topic…how the control group was established and what parameters were measured as statistically significant to demonstate a cause and effect relationship that the BSN degree is necessary. I have yet to see any compelling evidence that the push to BSN is anything other than a marketing ploy for Magnet status and money.
