These traumatic injuries are so difficult due to the suddenness and the inability many times, to say goodbye. I wish you peace and courage as you move forward and in raising your children. I have recently retired from nursing and for the past 12 years I have worked in Utilization Management. But for many years I was a staff nurse and at times, an assistant nurse manager. I’m a firm believer in every nurse experiencing a good amount of bedside nursing before moving into management positions. What I’ve seen at the acute care level is everyone striving to attain graduate degrees so they can move higher up the food chain. Somehow, the actual bedside care is seen as something less desirable, and certainly less prestigious. And I definitely think people who have an undergrad in something totally unrelated to nursing and are offered a 12 mo. program to get their R.N. should be required to have clinical rotations before they take the boards. We have to maintain our practice and our legacy of informed, empathic care for our patients and families. Nursing is a huge part of a patient’s recovery and it’s been proven that hospitals which have a higher ratio of RN’s to patients have not only better outcomes, but also lower mortality. We need nurses who are well prepared in these skills – the art of nursing – and not just the science. Best wishes to you and your family!

It is so true that we must never lose sight of why we are nurses, in ICU, and in every setting. Patients and their families must continue to be the center of our practice regardless of the setting. I truly believe we are the force that will improve health care both at the bedside, as patient advocates and as a voice in health policy.
Thanks for all you do.
